Commissioner's Corner — Round 10: Austria

Mercedes go 1-3, and the championship leader picks... neither.

Austria served up a Mercedes masterclass — Russell to victory, Antonelli third with the fastest lap — and a fantasy table that split almost entirely on one question: did you have George Russell?

Marks Marauders did, alongside Verstappen and Antonelli, and took the round with a commanding 99. (Your Commissioner promises this is the last he'll mention it.) MWS Racing and Dragonfly tied for second on 89 with the spookiest stat of the weekend: identical six-driver lineups, identical scores. Some things simply can't be coached.

But the headline belongs at the foot of the table.

Team Bennie-tton has led this championship from Round 1. In Austria, the runaway leader scored 33 — and you have to admire the commitment it takes to post that number at a race won by a Mercedes. The recipe: own a Ferrari pairing that returned twelve points and a zero, then hold Pierre Gasly as he collected Carlos Sainz and a −9 for the trouble. Russell's 35 and Verstappen's 28 sailed straight past. The lead survives at 814 to 762, but it is melting in real time — 139 at Monaco, 47 at Barcelona, 33 here. Fasnacht FC is 52 points back and gaining with every round.

Spare a thought for Harvey Mushman, who finished bottom on 30 despite owning the race winner. Russell's 35 points were on the sheet — then promptly buried under Gasly, a retired Sainz, and a Leclerc blank. Owning the top scorer and finishing last is a rare and terrible art.

And a tip of the cap to Racing Point, who had the round won on paper with Verstappen, Russell and Antonelli all aboard, only for that same Gasly trap to clip 9 points and a likely podium.

And down the order, because everyone earns a mention:

Almila Racing is the quiet assassin of this season — Verstappen and Antonelli both aboard, a tidy 61, and third place overall on 742 while the league fixates on the teams above and below. Ignore at your peril.

Heads Up Racing banked a respectable 63 off its Verstappen/Antonelli core — handy work, and seemingly done a driver light. Fill that last seat and it's a top-three round.

Luck of the Irish, fresh from its Monaco smash-and-grab of 149, returned to earth on 48. The Hadjar–Piastri–Antonelli spine held up; a lap-one Bottas brake fire did not.

Brutus Force 1 lands the round's sharpest single call — Isack Hadjar for 13, sixth on the road and largely unspotted — then undoes it by holding Lance Stroll into a DNF and a −10. Giveth, taketh.

After ten rounds: Team Bennie-tton 814, Fasnacht FC 762, Almila Racing 742, Racing Point 733 — the title race tighter than it has looked all season.

Next stop: Silverstone, and a sprint weekend that could finally crack the gap at the top wide open.
